La última entrega de Korn es potencia y una demostración de su esencia, pero también es una demostración de actualidad. En ese sentido, y sin dejar nunca la fuerza, el aura del disco es más bien esperanzador, optimista y lúcido, conceptos que no han sido invitados a la mesa en trabajos anteriores.

Este concepto lumínico es, quizás, el gran plus del álbum. En tan sólo 9 canciones y concisos 33 minutos, Korn despliega todo su arsenal de recursos, sonando como un gran combo y en que la figura de Jonathan Davis brilla con luz propia.

A lo largo del viaje musical que propone el quinteto, viaje que, por cierto, fluye cual caudal de río (y que es recomendable escuchar de una sola vez, sin anestesia), destaca la fuerza y, además, la capacidad de aprovechar bien cada segundo, tanto desde lo musical como desde lo lírico.

El mismo Davis ha convivido con pérdidas recientes que han golpeado su vida. Este “detalle” fue expuesto con total transparencia en su anterior disco (“The Nothing”, 2019) de una manera carnal y ruda. Bueno, el mismo “detalle” que detonó álbumes pasados, ahora es el motor para salir del túnel hacia la luz, tránsito que sortean con increíble naturalidad y que está plasmada en cada canción de “Requiem”.

Si ha esto sumamos lo que los músicos aportan, cada uno desde su rol, el resultado es satisfactorio. El disco tiene momentos que evocan épocas pasadas con tintes nostálgicos. Por ejemplo, las capacidades vocales y recursos desplegados por Davis en “Worst is on its Way” llevan al oyente a tiempos pretéritos sacados del baúl de los recuerdos y que, para más remate, parecía que ya habían recibido la extremaunción de los enfermos hace rato.

Otra virtud que tiene este nuevo disco es que es una puerta de entrada bastante fácil de digerir para nuevos oyentes del grupo. Para los más viejos, como este escribano, que han vivido la carrera de Korn desde que remeciera la década de los noventa (en especial los cimientos de MTV), “Requiem” es un bálsamo bien recibido y, tal como expuse, trae de vuelta a ese sonido que parecía extinto. Sin embargo, para los que se acercan a Korn hoy, “Requiem” se convierte en el hall perfecto para después entrar y hacer un recorrido por cada una de las piezas de la casa de Korn.

A no confundirse. “Requiem” es un hall que funciona e invita, pero sin sacrificar la energía. En ningún caso el disco deja de lado esa semilla del sonido de Korn. En el fondo, es un álbum que no reniega del pasado musical, sino que lo abraza, trae al frente y lo expone como un baluarte. En este en particular, uno catalizador y sanador. Aunque no se podría catalogar como un disco “alegre”, el álbum si expele cierta esperanza y optimismo en algunas facetas y eso, para un grupo que ya está en otra etapa de sus vidas, es bastante gratificador.

Tal como ya apunté, esa podría ser la gran idea que queda dando vueltas después de escuchar el disco. Que este regreso, con todas las complicaciones expuestas, tanto personales como grupales, es un buen regreso. “Requiem” es el reflejo del Korn de hoy. Y se constata que, corriendo el velo, la esencia se mantiene intacta.

Korn’s latest installment is powerful and a demonstration of its essence, but it is also a demonstration of the present. In that sense, and without ever losing strength, the album’s aura is rather hopeful, optimistic and lucid, concepts that have not been invited to the table in previous works.

This lighting concept is, perhaps, the great plus of the album. In just 9 songs and a concise 33 minutes, Korn unfolds its entire arsenal of resources, sounding like a great combo and in which the figure of Jonathan Davis shines with his own light.

Throughout the musical journey that the quintet proposes, a journey that, by the way, flows like a river flow (and that it is advisable to listen to all at once, without anesthesia), the strength stands out and, furthermore, the ability to make the most of each second, both musically and lyrically.

Davis himself has lived with recent losses that have hit his life. This «detail» was exposed with total transparency on his previous album («The Nothing», 2019) in a carnal and rude way. Well, the same “detail” that triggered past albums is now the engine to get out of the tunnel towards the light, a traffic that they overcome with incredible naturalness and that is embodied in each song on “Requiem».

If we add to this what the musicians contribute, each one from their role, the result is satisfactory. The album has moments that evoke past times with nostalgic overtones. For example, the vocal capacities and resources displayed by Davis in «Worst is on its Way» take the listener to past times taken from the trunk of memories and that, to top it all off, it seemed that they had already received the extreme unction of the sick a long time ago.

Another virtue that this new album has is that it is a gateway that is quite easy to digest for new listeners to the group. For the older guys, like this scribe, who have lived through Korn’s career since the 1990s rocked (especially the foundations of MTV), «Requiem» is a welcome balm and, as I said, brings back to that sound that seemed extinct. However, for those who approach Korn today, «Requiem» becomes the perfect hall to later enter and take a tour of each of the rooms in the house of Korn.

Not to be confused. “Requiem” is a hall that works and invites, but without sacrificing energy. In no case does the album leave aside that seed of Korn’s sound. Basically, it is an album that does not deny the musical past, but rather embraces it, brings it to the fore and exposes it as a bastion. In this particular one, a catalyst and healer. Although it could not be classified as a «happy» album, the album does expel a certain hope and optimism in some facets and that, for a group that is already in another stage of their lives, is quite gratifying.
