El regreso de My Morning Jacket después de seis años retoma la senda que ellos mismos abandonaron alguna vez. Es un disco sin mucha estridencia, que está más bien enfocado en lograr buenas canciones y alcanzar pasajes sonoros interesantes. Y eso lo logra.

El grupo se ve aceitado. Muestra de esto es “Regulary Scheduled Programming”, canción que da el vamos; es un portón que recibe a todos con los brazos abiertos. De inmediato destaca la segunda pista “Love, Love, Love”, hit en clave bailable, si se quiere, pero lo más importante, entregando frescura y vitalidad a la propuesta.

La banda ya adquirió cierta altura en cuanto a la musical y a su carrera también. Dignos representantes del folk norteamericano, el grupo se nota más cohesionado que en sus entregas anteriores, pero sin abandonar su esencia. “In Color” es una muestra de aquello, mezclando diversos ingredientes que convergen de la mejor manera.

La batuta de Jim James se nota, pero en esta ocasión, el resto de los integrantes lo acompaña en la aventura, sonando, como ya se destacó, cohesionados y naturales. Lo cierto es que en este trabajo hay espacio para un sinfín de sonidos que conviven apaciblemente. Muestra de eso es el track “Least Expected”, suave inicio que desemboca en un sonido pegajoso y pulsante. Eso es lo que produce eficientemente este disco: logra que algunos pasajes queden atrapados con facilidad en la mente.

“Never in the Real Word” sigue la línea de sonidos tipo Alabama Shakes, otro grupo que pasea la bandera del rock sureño norteamericano por el mundo. Este quinto track es uno de los puntos altos del álbum. En “The Devil’s in the Details”, la banda deja fluir toda la experimentación y psicodelia en una composición que bordea los 10 minutos a un ritmo cansino.

“Lucky to be Alive” retoma el camino más alegre, esperanzador si se prefiere. Ese quiebre entre ambas canciones está muy bien logrado. El final de “Lucky to be Alive” recurre a variados recursos que no alcanzan a saturarlo. “Complex” es otro de los puntos fuertes. Directa y con un sonido marcado a pulso, podría entrar con tranquilidad dentro de los singles del álbum. Así y todo, suman recursos que navegan en la experimentación.

La calma retorna con “Out of Range” Pt2, devolviendo al disco a un estado apacible y pleno. En cambio, “Penny for the Thoughts” propone volver a la ruta del rock sureño, destacando la voz de James. Además, entrega pistas de que el final del disco se acerca. Final al que “I Never Could Get Enogh” pone broche. Es otra larga duración en que la banda lleva sus sonidos entre la psicodelia y la paz, rematando el álbum casi como un susurro.

La nueva entrega de My Moning Jacket confirma que la banda ha regresado en busca de un sendero que tenía abandonado, pero que conoce de memoria. En ese escenario el resultado es agradable, dejando algunos momentos destacados que elevan el disco a dignas alturas. En ese plan, cada canción tiene su qué, cada una aporta desde una perspectiva diferente a alcanzar un álbum redondito. Así, hacen honor a sus orígenes y proyectan su legado. “My Morning Jacket” merece una oportunidad.

The return of My Morning Jacket after six years takes up the path that they themselves once abandoned. It is an album without much stridency, which is rather focused on achieving good songs and reaching interesting sound passages. And that does it.

The group looks oiled up. An example of this is “Regulary Scheduled Programming”, a song that gives the go; it is a gate that welcomes everyone with open arms. The second track “Love, Love, Love” immediately stands out. It is a danceable hit, if you like, but most importantly, delivering freshness and vitality to the proposal.

The band has already reached a certain height in terms of the musical and its career as well. Worthy representatives of North American folk, the group feels more cohesive than in its previous installments, but without abandoning its essence. «In Color» is a sample of that, mixing various ingredients that converge in the best way.

Jim James’s baton is noticeable, but this time, the rest of the members accompany him on the adventure, sounding, as already highlighted, cohesive and natural. The truth is that in this work there is space for endless sounds that coexist peacefully. Proof of this is the track “Least Expected”, a soft beginning that ends in a sticky and pulsing sound. That’s what this record produces efficiently: it makes certain passages easily caught in the mind.

«Never in the Real Word» follows the line of sounds like Alabama Shakes, another group that walks the flag of American southern rock around the world. This fifth track is one of the high points of the album. In “The Devil’s in the Details”, the band lets all the experimentation and psychedelia flow in a composition that borders 10 minutes at a weary pace.

«Lucky to be Alive» takes the happier path, hopeful if you prefer. That break between the two songs is very well achieved. The end of «Lucky to be Alive» uses various resources that fail to saturate it. «Complex» is another of the strengths. Direct and with a freehand sound, it could easily enter the singles of the album. Even so, they add resources that navigate experimentation.

The calm returns with «Out of Range» Pt2, returning the album to a peaceful and full state. Instead, «Penny for the Thoughts» proposes to return to the southern rock route, highlighting the voice of James. In addition, it provides clues that the end of the album is near. End to which «I Never Could Get Enogh» puts a brooch. It is another full length in which the band takes their sounds between psychedelia and peace, finishing the album almost like a whisper.

The new installment of My Moning Jacket confirms that the band has returned in search of a path that they had abandoned, but that they know by heart. In that setting the result is pleasant, leaving some highlights that elevate the album to dignified heights. In this plan, each song has its what, each one contributes from a different perspective to achieve a round album. Thus, they honor their origins and project their legacy. «My Morning Jacket» deserves a chance.
